Rummage sales have been treasured rituals in Chicago’s North Shore suburbs and surrounding communities for 90 years. Several dozen churches, synagogues, and nonprofit groups host sales that raise significant sums to distribute to diverse, deserving outreach agencies and programs. Unsold sale items are donated to select groups to help less-advantaged community members. NSCR is not an all-inclusive list of area rummage sales, but it includes many of the oldest, largest high-quality sales.
25 separate sales over six months; thousands of volunteer hours spent sorting, pricing, and selling incredible items; countless customers cleverly coming to shop, save, and support each sale; significant sums raised for diverse community outreach programs that make a meaningful difference; and unsold items sent to carefully chosen groups giving back to disadvantaged people. The remarkable ritual of rummage may have run its course this season but it will return in 2015.
